Archaeologists think that the Monastery is one of the first monasteries in Upper Egypt, and one of the oldest in the world. The Monastery was founded by St. Fana, in the early times there was over 1000 monks living there and continued to live in the monastery until the 15th century. The church in the monastery was built in the 6th century and the walls of the church were painted from the top to the bottom with many different crosses with different colors and the church was also in the shape of a cross. The paintings is dated before the 8th century before the Arabs came to Egypt because those rules could not have allowed the Christians to build such a church Archaeological assume that due to the weather condition in the desert, piles and layers of sand coved the monastery. In May 2004 the Holy Synod acknowledged the monastery and started the reconstruction. April 2006 The monastery was attacked by the Arabs residents from the surrounding areas with firearms. Coptic News contacted father Mena, a monk there, who explained to us that Mr. Abdulmoneim President of the city council signed the decision of the removal of one the buildings of the monastery and he escalated the decision to the governor of El Menya, who signed it also. The reason of the decision is that the building is on the land of cemeteries. This comes two weeks after 5 of the Arabs living around the monastery fired over 200 bullets on the monks’ cells. The monks, 12 at that time, were in the farm of the monastery. And as the monks tried to chase them, they fled away and no one was hurt. Father Mena said the monastery has no fence, and we are not able to obtain the required permits to build one or repair the old one. The manger of the department of the ancient artifacts said that we can build on our own costs and the legal expert Naguib Gabriel submitted a formal request to build the fence and so far no response and this make us vulnerable to attacks. 450000 LE were determined by the government to make the electric power reach the monastery and until now we still in the dark; however power was extended to the Arabs living 100 meter away of us. The road to the monastery was scheduled to be paved, however the plan was canceled and the road to the monastery is still bumpy. So no power, paved road and fence! Father Mena indicated that he feels that the 3 security guards appointed by the government to protect the monastery are spying on us and are anyway from the Arabs who lunched the attacks. And as we called the police no action was taken. The aim of the attacks is to oblige us to leave the place. There is no agreement between the President of the city council, the manger of the department of the ancient artifacts and the office of the governor considering the decision of the removal, so as we ask them to hand over the papers they eluded.
